The Carbon Dinos and Emery Spartans competed against ten other schools in the annual Eastern Utah Championship track and field meet, hosted by the Grand Red Devils Friday in Moab.

For the second consecutive year the Carbon Lady Dinos claimed first place, easily topping second place Emery 195.5 to 99. Uintah, Grand and Duchesne rounded out the top five of the 12 schools that competed.

The Emery Spartans came up just short of the championship on the boy’s side, falling to Uintah 133-111. Grand, San Juan and Carbon completed the top five in a highly competitive and congested field, also consisting of 12 schools.

The Lady Dinos displayed complete dominance as they logged eight first place finishes out of the 16 events throughout the afternoon. The stellar performance keeps the traveling trophy at Carbon High School for at least one more year.

Junior Shannon Baker scored the first top finish of the day for the Lady Dinos by topping Emery’s Jocee Funk in the 100 meters. Baker’s time of 13.47 was also enough to edge out teammates Lindsey Blanc and Harley Migliori, who finished third and fourth.

Blanc and Migliori gave Carbon a one-two finish in the 200 meter finals, racking up 18 team points in the process. Blanc ended with a time of 27.78, compared to Migliori’s 28.97 second place finish. Emery’s Funk finished third in the event with a time of 29.06.

Sophomore Megan Swasey and teammate Madelyn Christensen delivered another one-two finish for the Lady Dinos in the 300 meter hurdles. Swasey’s first place finish came after ending in second in the 100 meter hurdles.

Carbon continued to excel in the field events as Mikelle Monson won both the long jump and high jump. Sophomore Caitlyn Dimick added another first place mark in the javelin, marking the sixth individual first place finish for the team.

The Lady Dinos took home two more first place marks in the 4X100 and 4X400 relay races. The total team effort came together without senior standout Sarah Ohwiler, who is currently out with an injury.

Emery senior Erin Hurst scored a first place nod in the 3200 meters as she finished ahead of Carbon’s Emily Broadbear with a time of 12:19.58. Sophomore Tiana Jensen registered the Lady Spartans other first place finish in the 100 meters.

Senior Logan Cox led the way for the Spartans in their second place finish on the boy’s side of track. Cox topped Carbon’s Kyle Quinton and Cache Barrett for first place in the 100 meters. Cox also finished first in the 200 meters, finishing in 22.82 seconds.

The other individual first place finish for the Spartans came on the field as Chase Jewkes finished first in the javelin. The metric throw of 45.79 was enough to top Monticello’s Talon Black.

With the Eastern Utah Championship now in the books, both Carbon and Emery will turn their attention to the BYU Invitational this Friday and Saturday in Provo. The invitational will be the final meet before the regional championships next week.
