The Emery Lady Spartans solidified the No. 3 spot out of the 2A East with a 5-2 win over the San Juan Broncos Friday on the road.
Needing a win to avoid a coin flip tie-breaker for the No. 3 seed, the Lady Spartans relied heavily on their defense. Scoring all of their runs in the first two innings, Emery shut San Juan over the final five frames to preserve the win.
Bailey Huggard delivered one of her most complete efforts of the season by holding San Juan to just three hits. Recording six strikeouts and walking only two, Huggard threw just 108 pitches in the victory.
Addy Healy finished a perfect 3-3 at the plate, including a home run and two singles, to lead the Lady Spartans with three RBI. Huggard helped her own cause at the plate by recording two RBI. As a team Emery finished with seven hits.
Friday’s win sets the stage for a contest against Duchesne in the opening round of the 2A State Championship Tournament on Thursday in Spanish Fork. A win would place the Lady Spartans in the second round against either Enterprise or Millard.
Emery defeated Duchesne at the start of the season back on March 10 by a final score of 17-8. Thursday’s contest is scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m.. A win would place the Lady Spartans in a contest at 5:30, while a loss moves them to a 3:30 elimination game.
