The Emery Spartans participated in the Brigham Young University Invitational Saturday in Provo, ahead of the region finale in Grand on Wednesday.
Competing against 29 other schools from the 1A and 2A classification the Emery boys squad finished fifth overall as they accumulated 39 points. Sugar-Salem, a high school out of Idaho, claimed first place with 111.5 points. Delta, Mountain View and Beaver completed the top five.
Freshman Braiden Ivie recorded 16 points in individual events for Emery. Finishing the 100 meters in 11.07 seconds, Ivie logged a second place finish ending just behind Delta’s Dallin Draper. Ivie later finished second behind Draper again, this time in the 200 meters.
Senior Logan Cox finished fifth in the 400 meters with a final time of 52.54, and sixth in the 200 meters. Both Cox and Ivie joined Brady Boren, Keldan Guymon, Jake Jensen and Griffin Livingston for a fifth place finish in the sprint medley relay.
The Spartans also enjoyed success in the field events as Ty Mecham ended third in the shot put. Chase Jewkes also found the podium in the javelin with a third place nod.
The Lady Spartans scored just three points at the invitational as the sprint medley relay team finished sixth overall. Jaylee Brinkerhoff, Shelbee Murdock, Erin Hurst, Tayden Nielson, Katelyn Hurst and Makieya Bertuzzi ended the race in 4:39.31.
With Saturday’s invitational in the book, the Spartans will now prepare for the region finale on Wednesday in Moab. The state championship meet will take place next Friday and Saturday, again at BYU in Provo.
