The Emery Spartans completed the regular season for track and field with a second place performance on both the boy’s and girl’s side of the track at the region championship meet Wednesday in Moab.

Competing against five other schools the boy’s team ended with 99 points, just ten behind Manti for first. Grand finished in third with 78.5 points, followed by San Juan, North Sevier and Gunnison. The second place finish comes despite four first place finishes.

North Sevier ran away with the girl’s competition as they accumulated 128 points, compared to 73 for Emery. Manti finished in third with 62, followed by Grand, Gunnison and San Juan.

Erin Hurst recorded the lone first place finish for the Lady Spartans by topping the field int eh 3200 meters. Ending with a time of 12:17.77, Hurst out ran second place finisher Madison Norris from Manti by less than a second.

Following an impressive outing at the BYU Invitational on Saturday, freshman Braiden Ivie continued to impress with two first place finishes. Ivie topped teammate Logan Cox for a first place nod in the 100 meters, ending with a time of 11.02. The young speedster again claimed first in the 200 meters with an ending time of 22.32.

While Cox finished second in the 100 meters he scorched the field in the 400 meters. Topping Manti’s Jaden Sterner by a half second with a time of 52.54, Cox finished two seconds better than third and fourth place.

Daryl Guymon contributed the fourth top finish for the team as he breezed past the competition in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.28. The ending time was 0.79 seconds better than Manti’s Cooper Parry, who finished second.

The region finale sets the stage for the final week of the track and field season with the state championship meet on May 18 and 19. The season ending meet will take place at Brigham Young University, the same venue as last week’s invitational.
