The first season of USU Eastern softball came to end following a 3-2 loss to the Snow College Badgers in the Scenic West Athletic Conference tournament Thursday afternoon in Taylorsville.
Snow took advantage of a defensive battle in the fourth inning by scoring two runs to break a 1-1 tie. Despite finding some offense in the later innings, the Lady Eagles were unable to plate the tying run in the season ending loss.
Freshman Cassidy Howe finished with two RBI to pace the Eagles offense, which struggled throughout the contest. Trailing 1-0 in the third frame Howe scored Cheyanne Pratt with a two-out single to center field. Faced with a 3-1 deficit Howe again plated a run with a single to score Madi Blauer.
The season ending loss comes just one day after the Lady Eagles shocked the Southern Nevada Coyotes in the opening round with a dominating 13-1 victory. Hours later USU Eastern was dropped to the one-loss bracket after suffering a 14-6 loss to Southern Idaho.
Despite several setbacks throughout the season, the Lady Eagles wrapped up conference play with a positive as they earned a split with the Snow College Badgers on the road. The two wins move USU Eastern to 5-35 in SWAC action, marking them as the sixth seed heading into league’s tournament.
