The school year may be coming to an end but school lunches will still be served in the Carbon County School District area. The Summer Lunch Program makes healthy and nutritious meals available for children who otherwise may not get a well-rounded meal at home during the summer. The program will begin on Monday, June 5 and run till Friday, August 18.

Currently our region is considered an economic disadvantage area and because of this two new sites were added last year to the Summer Lunch Program, Creekview and Wellington Elementary; both schools along with Sally Mauro and Bruin Point will serve lunch from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday through Thursdays. The Castle Valley Center is the only site that will offer both breakfast and lunch during the summer months. Breakfast is only scheduled for 30 minutes and set to begin at 8:30 am till 9:00 am, lunch is from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Children are encouraged to arrive early to the sites due to the fact that meals are served for a set amount of time.

As per federal guidelines meals are not “grab-n-go” they must be eaten where served on site. Anyone and everyone ages 18 and under can eat for free and guests don’t need to be from our county to benefit from this program. Again this year, baby food will be made available upon request and as always adults can eat for $4.00 at each of the sites.

Lunch items will vary and will range from chicken nuggets, pizza rippers, nachos, orange chicken, chicken legs, cheeseburgers etc. Kids will have three choices, at least until the kitchen starts running out of the most popular choice for that day. Kitchen staff try to prepare enough but don’t want to over prepare.
