The Emery Spartans survived and advanced past two elimination contests as they defeated both Providence Hall and Enterprise Thursday in Kearns.
Opening the day against the No. 1 seed from the north, the Spartans topped Providence Hall 9-5 behind a consistent offensive performance. The win eliminated Providence Hall from the tournament as the Spartans advanced to meet Enterprise.
Easton Gordon led the way by going 3-4 with four RBIs and falling just a home run short of the cycle. Logan Labrum finished 1-3, knocking a double and recording two RBIs. As a team Emery logged 12 hits, compared to nine for Providence Hall.
Zac Jorgensen pitched a near complete game striking out nine and allowed five earned runs in 6.2 innings. Keaton McDermott finished the final out of the contest, giving up two hits and no earned runs.
Hours later the Spartans returned to the field to face the Enterprise Wolves for the right to advance into Friday. After trailing for most of the game Emery rallied to score eight runs in the final two frames en route to a 11-8 win.
Labrum once again came up big for the Spartans, finishing 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs, and one run. Jordan Balekta, Tel Gardner and Koda Alton all racked up two RBIs, while Nielsen and McDermott finished with one.
Enterprise scored at least one run in every inning and held a comfortable 6-3 lead entering the sixth frame. Emery’s biggest offensive burst came in the sixth as they scored five before posting three more in the seventh.
Nielsen recorded the win on the hill pitching 5.1 innings while allowing five earned runs. Gardner started the contest, going 1.2 frames and allowing three earned runs.
Still in need of five wins to claim a state championship, the Spartans will return to the field on Friday to meet Kanab, the No. 1 seed from the south region at 11:00 a.m.. A win would put Emery in a game with either Beaver or South Sevier with a chance to advance to the semifinals.
