The Emery Lady Spartans girls golf team captured its fourth region championship in four years of existence at the Cove View course in Richfield Wednesday afternoon.
Entering the meet unbeaten in region play, the team delivered a balanced and consistent effort as five players scored in the 60’s. Taijah Price led the way with a tournament best 72 points, while Sydnee Guymon and Lainee Jensen scored 64 points. Sarah Swasey logged the team’s fourth score with 62 points.
Guymon’s consistent performance throughout the year was enough for her to wrap up first place overall in the region. Finishing with 256 points, Guymon topped teammate Price by just two points. Grand’s Joopy Baumgartner and Sarah Day finished tied for third overall with 226. Jensen finished in fifth with 223, giving Emery three of the top five golfers in the region.
Wednesday’s win gives the Lady Spartans plenty of momentum heading into the state championship tournament on May 18 at the Mountain View course. Last year Emery finished second overall at state, but with five of the six girls seniors on this year’s team, experience looks to be in their favor.
