Tryouts for this year’s Helper American Legion Baseball team will take place Monday, May 22 at 6:00 PM at the legion field in Helper. This season will mark the second year of the program’s return following a brief hiatus in 2015.

Carbon High School manager Jeff Cisneros will once again coach the Helper squad, which has been around for over 55-years. The league will officially begin on June 2 at home, which puts a strict timeline on the team’s activities leading up to the season.

“We don’t have much time after tryouts to prepare for the season opener,” said Cisneros on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports. “We have a very competitive league this season with nine teams throughout the state, and I’m excited about the year.”

Typically the legion team consists of kids who are season baseball players, and have adequate high school experience. For that reason Cisneros will also field a team in Utah’s Perfect Game league, which will be made up of incoming freshman and sophomores.

“We are going to run two baseball programs this summer to try to give the kids in Carbon and Emery county a chance to get some baseball in,” said Cisneros. “I’m excited to give the younger kids some more experience on the baseball field as well.” Tryouts for the younger team will coincide with the American Legion session on May 22.

Helper will also play host to the opening round of the state championship tournament, regarding the Southern Division. The top eight of nine teams will play in a tournament that will take place in Helper, with the top four teams advancing to the state championship bracket the following week.
