The Emery Lady Spartans golf team capped off an unbeaten season with a 2A State Championship victory Thursday afternoon at the Mountain View Golf Course in West Jordan.
Sydnee Guyman scored 77 points to lead the Lady Spartans past Rowland Hall 285-276 for first place. Beaver finished in third with 263 points, followed by Grand and Delta. A total of 13 teams competed in the finale.
“The girls had a great practice round. They hit different clubs, especially on the par threes, to get their distances correct for the next day,” said head coach Tom Hansen. “It was breezy, but that helped us prepare because Thursday’s conditions mirrored Wednesdays practice round. We were ready to play.”
Taijah Price delivered the second highest Emery score with a 75, while Lainee Jensen finished with a 68. Sarah Swasey recorded the fourth score as she ended with 65. Sydney Timothy and Erin Oliverson scored 63 and 43 respectively.
Guyman and Price finished fourth and fifth overall on the individual leader-board. Jensen tied for ninth, while Swasey ended 14th. Timothy’s score was not counted towards the final total, but was good enough for a top 20 finish.
“This is a great group of girls,” said Scott Lofley, who has been the assistant coach for three seasons. “It is great to see them do so well and accomplish their goals of a state championship.”
Consisting of five seniors, the team of six girl’s managed to improve last year’s second place finish at the state tournament. In four years of existence the team has won four consecutive region championships, and has yet to lose a region meet. The building success paid off as most of the group will graduate this summer.
