Emery High School senior Tel Gardner has earned a 2A All-State First Team selection following a standout 2017 campaign. Fellow senior Zac Jorgensen and Junior Easton Gordon both received Honorable Mentions.
Tabbed as one of the team’s top starting pitchers, Gardner also played a key role for the Spartans in the outfield throughout the season. His contributions on the field helped Emery qualify for the state tournament after a third place finish in a highly competitive region that featured the state champions and the runners up.
Gardner was a key contributor for Emery during their run through the state tournament that included wins over South Summit, Providence Hall and Enterprise. During his senior campaign Gardner accumulated a batting average of .434 with 16 doubles, 20 RBIs and a .500 OBP.
After sitting out the 2016 season Jorgensen returned to claim a key spot in Emery’s pitching rotation. Gordon provided consistent offense at the plate, and proved to be versatile with production in the field and on the mound.
“I couldn’t have asked for anymore out of our seniors throughout the season,” said manager Shawn Alton during his season wrap up interview in May. “Tel and Zach are arms that aren’t going to be replaceable, and I think they showed a lot during this past season.”
The 2A All-State teams were selected by each of the coaches in the classification and the Deseret News selects a MVP from the group.
