The KARB Kickin Country 98.3 Annual Pie Auction was very profitable with their numbers this year, it defiantly outweighed last year’s total by $4,000.00. This event helps generate funds that stay local to assist cancer patients in Carbon, Emery and Grand Counties. This year the entire event took place at Castle Country Radio Stations rather than the usually pick-up location of the Carbon County Fairgrounds Event Center.
The auction started off at 9:00 am with Drive Time Sports, Jordan Buscarini at the helm with on-air guest Mayor Joe Piccalo. The Mayor along with First Lady Barbara donated a Dutch apple pie that was bundled with a $25.00 Smith’s gift card and $100.00 Sinclair fuel card from Pierce Oil which was sold for $150.00.
A total of 60 pies were donated by local residents, business leaders and dignitaries. This year featured good o’l American Apple pie, coconut cream, chocolate pie, pecan pie and banana cream. There are also a few crowd favorites each year that always cause a bidding war. For instance, Rose Barnes’ famous baklava, which was bundled with Carbon Recreation’s eight person river trip and two Florida Georgia Line concert tickets and it generated $350.00. Another famous pie, Fuzzy’s Daiquiri, it was accompanied with a Dinosaur Les Schwabb Tires full service certificate and brought in $60.00. New this year and sure to be a crowd favorite for years to come was an exquisite Dutch Oven Brownie Ganache pie that was donated by Bill and Toni Thayne, it came with a $20.00 certificate to Carolyn’s Creations in Huntington and it generated $200.00.
The items that were bundled with the delicious pies ranged from gift cards to local businesses in both Carbon and Emery counties, gift baskets, two-year membership certificates to the Clark Planetarium, concert tickets, passes to the Natural History Museum of Utah, Range Creek tour for two and home décor.
Mornings with Mallery host took over the mic early afternoon where she started with guests Angela Child, PR and Misty Birch from Castleview Hospital. They highlighted the various services they can offer to assist cancer patients in the area. Continuing the rest of the day were a number of guests who shared inspiring stories of help and hope with either coping or surviving cancer. Overall, the event organizers, volunteers, merchants/businesses, guests and the entire community would agree that the annual pie auction is a gratifying way to can give back to the community when it comes to “Kickin Cancer in the Pie.”
Customers who won bids on the pies and other merchandise came out to the radio station located on Carbonville Road to pick up their winnings as well as a free event t-shirt with the logo of “Kickin Cancer in the Pie.” If individuals would like to purchase an event t-shirt for $5.00, which also goes to the pie auction proceeds may visit the radio station at 1899 Carbonville Road.
After eight hours of auctioning off pies all day, it was only fitting that the final pie was the one to generate the most proceeds for the cause. A Razzleberry pie donated by State Representative, Christine Watkins, whom earlier was a guest on-air, had her pie originally bundled with a $50.00 Sutherlands gift card and a gift box from Guild Mortgage. Radio Station Office Manager, Ann Anderson sprang into action by upping the ante with concert tickets to the annual Country Jam gathering in Grand Junction, as well as several late summer concerts at the USANA Amphitheatre in West Valley City. The pie, along with all the extra goodies was purchased by Dinosaur Les Schwabb Tires for a whopping $1,400.00.
Overall, Station Manager Paul Anderson was pleased with the results and outcome from this year’s auction – from all of the donations, to on-air guests, to community members who purchased the pies. The final numbers have yet to be set in stone but Anderson threw out some numbers, total of pies sold added to $9,554.00, which averaged about $160.00 per pie, along with cash contributions of $2,750.00, that are still being donated at this time have brought an approximate grand total to $12,304.00.
The funds earned stay local to assist residents in Carbon, Emery and Grand Counties that must travel to receive cancer treatments with $100.00 fuel cards, as well as towards the Thomas B Anderson scholarship fund that helps a student in either Carbon or Emery county who has had or has cancer to further their education.
