Off-season workouts for the Carbon Dinos football program continued as the team joined several other schools, including the Emery Spartans, at a 7-on-7 camp in Manti this past Saturday.
Entering year three under head coach Josh Huntsman, the 7-on-7 experience was the second this month for the Dinos. The first took place back on June 3 at the Ute Shoot on the campus of the University of Utah.
“We go to these camps to look at what is going to be viable for our offense,” said Huntsman earlier this month on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports. “It’s a good opportunity to see your kids run proper routes, but you can’t too much away from it.”
Playing in six games throughout the day, the Dinos finished with a record of 4-2. Ending with just one loss in pool play, Carbon suffered a tournament ending loss to North Sanpete on the final drive of the offensive orientated game.
As 7-on-7 camps become more and more frequent, the benefits for teams continue to grow. Playing without pads or lineman, quarterbacks have an opportunity to find cohesion with the receiving core. Receivers have an opportunity to play in space, improve their route running and showcase their speed.
While the two camps have focused on skill players, lineman have also had the opportunity to participate in challenges throughout the workouts. As Huntsman continues to work on revitalizing the football program, he says he’s optimistic based on the team’s competitive nature.
Carbon will great a break from off-season camps for the next three weeks before they open their annual ‘Camp Carbon’ in the Castle Country area. From July 13-21 the team will go through season preparations in their own backyard, before traveling to Millard on July 18.
