The Helper Merchants encountered a series of ups-and-downs as the team complete a five game road trip with a 3-2 record in St. George.
Opening the four game road trip with a Southern Division contest on Wednesday, Helper exploded offensively in the final two innings to top Dixie 13-5. The win moved Helper to 3-0 in division action.
Jayden Flemmet led Helper in the box with three RBIs as he finished 2-4 at the plate. Taylon Abeyta, Jadon Robertson and Anthony Jones all recorded two RBIs. As a team Helper finished with 10 hits, which equaled the total from Dixie.
Taylon Abeyta recorded the win on the hill, pitching 4.1 innings of relief work. Entering the game down 3-2, Abeyta allowed just six hits and two earned runs during his time in the game. Zac Bradley allowed allowed four hits and three earned runs in two innings.
Unable to carry the momentum built in Wednesday’s win over to Thursday, Helper suffered their first league loss of year in blowout fashion to St. George 24-2.
Falling behind 5-0 by the end of the first inning, the deficit continued to grow for Helper as St. George added 16 runs between the second and third innings. The loss means an split in the two-game season series between the two teams.
Adrien Sanchez took the loss on the hill giving up 10 earned runs in 2.2 innings of action. Tyler Vasquez and Tiger Thayn finished the final two innings giving up a combined eight earned runs in the process.
Friday Helper participated in double-header action apart of an out-of-season tournament, splitting two games.
After falling to Cincinnati 10-1, the Merchants responded by edging Jackson Post 9-8 to advance to Saturday’s finale against Eagle.
In the final game of the weekend Helper once again found the groove offensively and earned a 20-10 win to close out a busy week. The win sets Helper at 9-4 overall on the season.
The Merchants will continue Southern Division play when they return to the field on Tuesday at home against Roosevelt in double-header action. Roosevelt is currently 2-3 in league play.
