The USU Eastern women’s basketball team put the final touches on a three-day camp geared towards youth in the local area Wednesday afternoon at the B-DAC.
Athletic director and head coach Chelsey Warburton, along with assistant coach Morgan Warburton-Nelson, once again organized the camp for boys and girls in grades first through eighth. During the three-day camp participants had the opportunity to learn fundamentals and see basic philosaphies associated with the program.
“Half of the kids are from Emery and half are from Carbon, so we’ve been happy with the turn out this year,” said Warburton. “Community is a big key in what we want to do here. We want to work with kids and let them know who we are. This camp has been a good way to do that.”
Several players on this year’s team helped give instruction throughout the clinic, which ran in two separate sessions based on age. Warburton says part of the fun is watching her players interact with the kids.
“The team is excellent with the kids. Its a fun time for them, and the same with us as coaches,” said Warburton. “This is a good break from the office and the things that we have to do on a regular day.”
The youth camp wraps up a busy month for the program, which also played host to a high school team camp at the beginning of the month. Schools from all over the state traveled to Price to compete against each other as part of their summer workouts.
While the camps give youth a chance to fine tune their basketball skills, Warburton says the end message for kids is simple: “Basketball is fun. You have to put the work in to be successful, but basketball is fun.”
