Brandon Flores, Director gave details about one of the events taking place this summer. “So the first thing that we have coming up that I want to share with you all today is our Summer Parent/Student Workshops series. We are really trying to do a lot more for the parents through the GEAR Up program, get them involved and engaged in their student’s education. If you’re a parent of a GEAR Up student or a parent that just wants to get involved.” All workshops are free, dinner will be provided and all are scheduled to start promptly at 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm. The locations will be held at Green River High on Thursday, July 6 and the final session will be held for Carbon, Pinnacle and Lighthouse students on Thursday, August 3 on the campus of USU-Eastern inside the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center.

Various topics will be covered during the workshop series, as Flores explains further, “So some of the topics include financial aid and college readiness, another workshop is about letting go and letting your child grow. In addition, we’ll have topics such as what a parent of a Senior needs to know about surviving that last year of high school and transition into college and what every Senior needs to know before graduating from high school.” GEAR Up hopes students along with their parents will take full advantage of the workshops to gain knowledge that can assist them with moving forward after high school.

A STEAM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Exploration Field Trip is scheduled for GEAR Up students on Tuesday, July 11 to bring awareness of the various STEAM fields. “What we are going to be doing is starting off at USU-Eastern where we’ll be talking to professors of STEAM fields. We will do a little career exploration to help students figure out what different options are out there and in addition we’re actually going to visit different sites throughout both Carbon and Emery counties where they can see these STEAM fields in action.” The field trip is expected to bring visual and hands on learning for students to better understand STEAM fields.

The final event for the summer is the GEAR Up Day event which will be held at Utah Valley University in Provo on Wednesday, August 2. “A space where you can interact with other GEAR Up parents from throughout the state of Utah.
