Summer is well into its second month, children with their many activities tend to burn a lot more calories than usual due to record high summer temperatures. For this reason, it’s very important that children get a well-balanced meal, which is why Carbon and Emery School Districts offer a free Summer Lunch Program.
The Summer Lunch Program offers healthy and nutritious meals to children who otherwise may not get a well-rounded meal at home during the summer months.
Lunch items will vary from chicken nuggets, pizza rippers, nachos, orange chicken, chicken legs, cheeseburgers etc. Kids will have three choices, at least until the kitchen starts running out of the most popular choice for that day. Kitchen staff try to prepare enough but don’t want to over prepare. Children are encouraged to arrive early to the sites due to the fact that meals are served for a set amount of time.
The sites for Carbon School District started their program on June 5 and will run it till August 18. The sites at Creekview, Wellington, Sally Mauro and Bruin Point Elementary offer lunch from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday through Thursdays. The Castle Valley Center is the only site that offers both breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is served for only 30 minutes, from 8:30 am till 9:00 am, with lunch served from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Emery School District started their program on June 5 and will run it till July 21 at Cottonwood Elementary in Orangeville, Ferron Elementary in Ferron and Book Cliff Elementary in Green River from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
As per federal guidelines meals are not “grab-n-go” they must be eaten where served on site. Anyone and everyone ages 18 and under can eat for free and guests don’t need to be from our county to benefit from this program. Again, this year, baby food will be made available upon request and as always adults may eat for $4.00 a meal.
