The Southeast Utah Health Department is working with the Utah Cancer Control Program to provide cancer screening and education to underserved women ages 40 to 64 years old based on their annual income.

“Through Southeast Utah Health Department, the Utah Cancer Control Program provides pap tests, pelvic exams, clinical breast exams, mammograms to eligible women,” stated Shawnee Arrioti, Health Department RN. Female nurses play a big role with the patients by providing education regarding cancer risks and encouraging prevention through regular examinations.

Currently the participation of women in our area taking advantage of the services is extremely low compared to Grand County. “I really want to work to increase our numbers, but Price we are having a really difficult time getting our numbers up and it’s just a really valuable program,” stated Arrioti. The benefits of the program can assist women to live a healthy lifestyle.

“Other services we provide are cholesterol testing, glucose testing, as well as lifestyle counseling. If we are doing the cholesterol checks and glucose checks and we find an abnormal, we do pay for one doctor’s visit to a contracted doctor,” said Arrioti. The services could help prevent the occurrence and decrease illnesses that impact ones life.
