Tony Bradley Jr., one of two Utah Jazz first round draft picks from June, made an appearance at the BDAC on the campus of USU Eastern Tuesday afternoon, giving local youth instruction on the game of basketball. The free clinic ran in conjunction with Carbon County Recreation’s Junior Jazz Program.
For close to an hour Bradley worked on fundamentals and simulated pick up games with over 40 kids in attendance. After multiple drills and games Bradley posed for pictures and signed autographs for each child in attendance.
“This is an unbelievable experience to go around and meet the kids,” said Bradley following the clinic. “I was in their shoes before, looking up to players. So for me, seeing the smiles on their face, it makes my day.”
Bradley, who played just one season of college basketball at the University of North Carolina, was acquired by the Jazz in a draft night trade with the Los Angeles Lakers. Becoming an intricate part of the North Carolina bench while in college, he averaged 7.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game as the team went on the win the National Championship..
“Coach Roy (Williams) is a great, hall of fame coach,” Bradley said when asked about his time at UNC. “I learned a lot every day in practice. He would tell me different things that I still use today in every day life.”
Bradley was one of two first round selections for the Jazz, along with Donovan Mitchell, who was also acquired in a draft night trade. The two moves were just part of what was a busy off-season for the Jazz.
“The Jazz called me the pick before I was selected and told me the Lakers were going to pick me, but they were going to trade me to Utah. I never thought I was going to Los Angeles. I was happy because I’ve heard the Jazz are really good at developing players, and I’ve got to see that with Rudy and Gordon over the years.”
Bradley will continue to make visits to several counties throughout the state over the next few weeks. After completing the Junior Jazz tour, Bradley says he’ll retreat to California to work on strengthening his body for the upcoming season.
