The start of a new school year is always an exciting time, not only for students, but for families. The teachers and administrators are looking forward to welcoming back returning students and meeting new students for another academic school year of learning and development.

The teachers will begin the new year in just a few days before the arrival of students. “The teachers will start on Monday the 21st and that’s their first day. They’ll have opening institute, they get their classrooms ready and then they have two days of training because we have some really big new things this year, so they’ll have two days of training,” said Jeff Richens, School Board Member. Teachers will use the time before doors open to set and lay out goals for what they will expect from their students this year.

A new school not only brings new faces but it also brings new curriculum. “The Carbon School District just adopted a new reading basal. The whole basis of the reading program from all of elementary school. This is not just something though the state thrusts on us or the board office thrusts on the teachers; this is a tool the teachers use to help all the students to improve their reading, the fluency, their comprehension, all those things,” stated Richens. The program was reviewed by several instructional coaches, teachers and administrators who all agreed that it would be a tremendous benefit for students.

With only days, away students are enjoying their last days of summer before returning to lessons, homework and extracurricular activities “The students show up on Thursday the 24th, that is the first day of class and so parents or drivers slow down and watch out for kids because they are suddenly going to be on the streets in front of you,” said Richens. Traffic will be congested with busses, along with parents dropping off their students so it’s important that drivers are fully aware of their surroundings to prevent any accidents. Parents are encouraged to share this information with their young drivers that commute on their own to and from school.

Carbon School District is looking forward to another year of providing students with every opportunity to reach their full potential. To see a complete school calendar visit the district’s website at www.carbonschool.org
