The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is offering two free introduction clinics during the month of September for youth and adults of all ages. The first clinic will be held is the Waterfowl Hunting Clinic that will take place at Desert Lake WMA, east of Elmo, Utah on Saturday, September 23 at 8:00 am till 12:00 pm.
“It’s one of our bigger clinics that we have every year. This is a clinic where people can come and learn how to hunt waterfowl,” stated Conservation Outreach Manger, Morgan Jacobsen. “It’s not very complicated, it’s not hard but it is a little bit different than upland game hunting or big game hunting.” Participants can plan on learning at several stations that will be set up to learn how to call ducks and geese, identify the various species and observe retrieving dogs in action. A hands-on opportunity to experience shooting clay pigeons from a blind will be offered, as well as gaining the knowledge in how to arrange decoys. There will a duck calling contest for a chance to win prizes.
Making its appearance after being absent for some time is a Fly Fishing Clinic to be held on Saturday, September 30 at 8:30 am at the DWR-Price office located at 319 North Carbonville Road. “This is the first time we have done a clinic like this here in Price for at least a long while. Fishing is a very diverse sport, you have a lot of different ways to participate and fly fishing is one of those specialized and really fun ways to go catch fish,” said Jacobsen. The course will start out with a classroom tutorial on the gear you need, choosing the right flies and learning the difference from fly fishing on lakes vs streams. After the morning instruction, participants are invited to the Carbon County fishing pond for a hands-on demonstration on casting and lure demonstration. DWR will provide the poles and tackle for everyone to use.
If you would like more information on either of the clinics call the DWR office at (435) 613-3707.
