Habitat for Humanity is schedule to assist 85-year-old, Korean Veteran, Carmel J DeCaro on Saturday, September 23 at 9:00 am until the project is completed. They are in need of several volunteers to help remove old ground cover and lay new gravel, as well as, clean-up the debris in his back yard.
DeCaro was born in Trinidad, Colorado where he lived until the passing of his father at the age of 12. His mother, along with his three brothers packed up and moved to Price. It was shortly after, his mother remarried and the family made Carbon County their home. When he turned the age of 18, he made the decision to enlist in the Army, which resulted in a tour in Korea. His bravery, patriotism and respect for his brethren shows proudly to this very day by the display of the American Flag in his front yard.
Upon returning from the war, he got married, but later divorced. The marriage blessed him with 4 children, 2 boys and two girls, who were his pride and joy. He spent a lot of time with his children teaching them to fish and hunt around areas in Carbon County. He lives alone independently in his Price home where you will find his children checking on him daily.
For 25 years, DeCaro worked devotedly at Koret of California before opting for the retirement life. There was never a time he didn’t offer help to others, his knowledge made it easy to fix just about anything, from automobiles to plumbing. Friends and family would find him on many occasions in the kitchen, cooking up some delicious Italian dishes, often times using items from his garden. He defiantly had a green thumb when it came to his garden, so much, that it grew an overabundance of crops, which he often would donate to the local food bank. However, as the years went by, it became too difficult to keep up with his garden and yard.
Recently, his daughter, Tracie Coleman applied for assistance, on behalf of her father from Habitat for Humanity, where he was quickly approved. They have already begun installation of a much-needed hand rail on his front porch and the next step is to tackle the ground cover along with cleanup of debris in his yard.
In order for Habitat for Humanity to complete this project, they are in need of volunteers both young and old. This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals and/or groups to show their appreciation to a Veteran, who didn’t hesitate to fight for our country. Volunteers interested in making a difference by lending a helping hand may contact the Habitat for Humanity office at (435) 637-9701.
