A fast start propelled the Emery Lady Spartans past the Grand Red Devils 3-2 in a Region 15 contest Thursday afternoon in Moab.

Looking to rebound from Tuesday’s loss to Manti, the Lady Spartans exploded out of the gate to capture a 2-0 lead before half time. Another Emery goal in the second half was enough to secure the win despite two scores from Grand.

Jocee Funk found the back of the net twice, running her season goal total to 13. Morgan Hurdsman added one goal, running her season total to six.

Thursday’s win moves Emery to 7-2 in Region 15 action, and 9-4-1 overall. In division play the Lady Spartans have scored 34 goals and allowed just 17, eight of which came in one game against division champion Manti.

With the No. 2 seed from the division secured, Emery will have one more region tilt as the team enters the final week of the regular season. Tuesday the Lady Spartans will play host to the Richfield Wildcats in the division finale. The regular-season will come to an end on Thursday with a road exhibition contest against Payson.
