The 2017 girls tennis season came to a close for the Emery Spartans and Carbon Dinos Thursday afternoon as all qualifying participants suffered losses in the opening round at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.

Emery Senior Amanda Johansen suffered a straight set loss to Delta’s Kimberly Lebaron, 6-0 and 6-1. Entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed from Region 15, Johansen was the lone singles player to qualify from Emery High School.

Freshman Macie Nelson and sophomore Jordynn Wolford fell in straight sets to Juab’s Jessica Willmore and Keana Williams. The young Emery duo found mild success in a 6-3 and 6-1 straight set loss.

Emery senior Kianna Pittman and junior Regan Sitterud were also eliminated in straight sets. The duo of Anna Drossos and Olivia Anderson from Judge Memorial advanced into the second round with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Carbon High School’s lone state qualifier Jewelianna Nielsen entered the tournament the No. 5 seed from Region 14, and was eliminated in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, by North Sanpete’s Hannah Ostraff.

The 3A State Championship Tournament will take a break in the action on Friday. Those who have advanced to the semifinals will resume play Saturday, again at Liberty Park, where the state champions will be crowned.
