Unable to recover from a slow start, the Emery Spartans suffered a 47-27 loss to the Morgan Trojans in the final home game of the regular season Friday evening.

Trailing 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, the deficit continued to grow as Morgan outscored the Spartans 33-7 the following two quarters. Emery’s offense found success in the fourth quarter by scoring 20 of the final stanza’s 27 points.

Emery quarterback Kyson Stilson finished out his most efficient game under center by completing 27 of 34 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns. Colton Willson was Stilson’s top target, catching 12 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively the Spartans struggled to contain Morgan running back Bridger Miller, who tallied 143 yards and touchdown on the ground. Quarterback Jacob Stephens had a huge night through the air despite throwing two interceptions, finishing with 280 yards on 11 completions.

Junior running back Rance Jensen continued to put up big numbers for the Spartans, ending with 118 yards on 17 carries. Sophomore Jaymes Bowman scored two touchdowns, both coming through the air from Stilson. Jared Snow scored the team’s other touchdown, also a pass from Stilson.

Friday’s loss dips Emery to 1-2 in 3A North action which puts them in a tie with Judge Memorial for fourth place. The win for Morgan keeps the Trojans as the only unbeaten team in the division, one game better than Union and Grantsville.

The Spartans will return to the field Friday to take on Union in the first of two road games to wrap up the regular season. A win would put Emery in position to play host to the opening round of the state tournament.
