Despite an 18-stroke improvement from day one, the Carbon Dinos wrapped up the 2017 golf season with a third place finish at the 3A State Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Cove View Golf Course in Richfield.
The Grand Red Devils claimed the state championship with two-day score of 620. The Morgan Trojans finished in second with a 624, followed by Carbon’s 634. North Sanpete and Judge Memorial rounded out the top five.
Entering the second and final day of competition trailing first place Grand by five strokes, the Dinos finished with a 308 team score. The improvement ran across the board as second place Morgan improved by 24 strokes finishing four behind Grand, who improved by 22 strokes.
Senior Ryan Gagon improved his day two score by three strokes to finish in a second place tie on the individual leaderboard with a final score of 151. Fellow senior Ryker Smith shot a 74 and 78 to end fourth overall. Grand’s Masen Ward recovered from a 79 on the first day by shooting a 71 Thursday to earn the individual crown.
Carbon underclassmen Carson Martines and Brady Gagon both logged top 20 individual finishes. Martines ended with a two day total of 165, including a 78 on Thursday. Gagon also shot a 78 on Thursday, improving by ten strokes from Wednesday’s total for a final score of 166.
Thursday’s finale brings an end to an exciting season for the Dinos as the team finished region play unbeaten for a second straight year. The team’s only loss during the regular season came in the annual Eastern Utah Cup at the end of the September.
