The Emery Spartans were unable to keep pace with the Union Cougars in a 52-14 lopsided loss Friday night in Roosevelt.
Competing in the fourth 3A North region tilt of the season, the Spartans got off to a fast start with touchdowns on the first two offensive drives of the game. Emery took a 14-3 lead on the first play of the second quarter, but failed to score again the remainder of the contest.
After a slow start offensively the Cougars began to rely on senior Jarom Miller, who finished the game with 197 yards on the ground and three touchdowns off of 13 carries. Miller’s success led to a 26-point second quarter for Union.
Despite early success in the third quarter, Emery’s offense was unable to sustain a lengthy drive to break the momentum. Union ended the contest with 49-unanswered points, improving to 3-1 in division play in the process.
Senior Jared Snow caught his second touchdown pass of the season for Emery in the setback. Fellow senior Colton Willson continued his consistent play with the team’s other score on the ground.
Now 1-3 in division play the Spartans will wrap up the regular season Friday on the road against the Grantsville Cowboys. Despite this past weekend’s loss, Emery still has an opportunity to host a first round playoff game with a win.
