Many children in the Castle Country area are narrowing down their costumes and looking forward to the Halloween holiday that is quickly approaching. This year the holiday falls during the week on a Tuesday. Sheriff Jeff Wood wanted to use this week’s update discussing Halloween Safety Tips that parents and children will know before October 31.

“For the last couple of years, the deputies have gone out on Rhinos for Halloween, we will be doing that again this year. So, make sure if you approach them you are not out in the street, be safe about it, they will pull over to the curb. They will have a Rhino load of candy to give out to the kids,” said Wood. The Sheriff, along with his Deputies look forward to being out among the youngest Carbon County citizens on such a fun night.

Parents are encouraged to be with their young children when they are out trick or treating to ensure their safety; for the older children, there should be a curfew, strict rules and boundaries set before they head out with their friends. “Make sure your little ghosts and goblins have some sort of lighting system or can be seen by traffic, make sure they’re in reflective clothing or a light of some kind, a glow stick work great,” said Wood. Once children have returned home for the evening parents need to carefully examine all the candy. Always throw away anything that looks to be tampered with, as well as, anything that is homemade.

Motorists that are out in the neighborhoods need to be sure to travel at a slow speed and be alert when driving in residential areas. “If you are out Halloween night just expect to be delayed because the kids aren’t going to be looking, you have to be very careful. We don’t want to have an incident for Halloween, so just be careful out there and have fun,” stated Wood. Drivers should be alert of their surroundings and eliminate any distractions to better focus on the road. Never assume a child in a costume will see your vehicle.
