The Emery Spartans wrapped up the regular season with a 21-13 loss to the Grantsville Cowboys on the road Friday night in a highly competitive Region 3A North contest.
In need of a win to potentially play host to a playoff game on Thursday, the Spartans held a 7-0 lead at half time. Grantsville captured a 14-7 lead in the third quarter and never looked back, clinching a first round bye for the playoffs in the process.
Emery quarterback Kyson Stilson delivered one of the team’s two touchdowns to fellow senior wide out Jared Snow. The second score came in the fourth quarter as Rance Jensen reached the endzone on a 18-yard run.
All three Grantsville touchdowns came on the ground as running backs Parker Thomas and Justin Richardson crossed the goal line. Quarterback Coy Johnson recorded the go-ahead score in the third quarter of a bootleg from nine yards out.
Friday’s loss gives the Spartans a final 1-4 record in the 3A North, placing them fifth in the final standings. Emery was in need of a Carbon win over Judge Memorial in order to move up to fourth and host the opening round of the state tournament.
The loss means Emery will now travel to Richfield on Thursday to meet the Wildcats for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals against Morgan. Thursday’s kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m., the live broadcast will begin on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM at 3:30.
