The Carbon Dinos 2017 football campaign came to an end as the team suffered a 66-6 loss to the Juan Diego Soarin’ Eagles in the opening round of the 3A State Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Draper.
Juan Diego held a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter as Hunter Easterly crossed the goal line on a 22-yard score. The Soarin’ Eagles added seven more as Luke Prokopis scored from eight yards out on the first play from scrimmage in the second.
The Dinos answered back on the ensuing possession as senior Nate Olson scored on a 90-yard run. Unable to convert the point after, Carbon’s new found momentum was short lived as Juan Diego scored the game’s next 52 points.
Olson finished with 133 yards and a touchdown off of 12 carries in his final game in a Carbon uniform. As a team Carbon accumulated 172 rushing yards, including 21 from Collin Lewis. Quarterback Noah Jones completed five of 12 passes for 53 yards and an interception.
Tristen Tonozzi and Zach Hoffman scored two touchdowns a piece on the ground to lead Juan Diego into the quarterfinals. Hoffman added one more score through the air as he connected with Prokopis on a 57-yard strike.
Though Carbon showed tremendous improvement under third-year head coach Josh Huntsman, Wednesday’s loss marks the 27th consecutive loss for the football program.
Despite the winless season the improvement on the field was obvious as Carbon doubled last year’s scoring output in region play, while also giving up 73 less points.
