Many individuals learned of Wayne Clausing’s departure when he did not submit his candidacy for the city’s mayoral position in June. An opportunity within Sutherlands, whom he’s been with for 40 years, was presented to him with an amazing position in the Salt Lake City store. Citizens of Price were looking forward to Clausing running for the head of city seat after watching the great things he had done while on the city council.
There is no doubt that Clausing has been a huge asset to both Carbon and Emery counties with how he treated his customers at Sutherlands, to the numerous board member positions he held. When it came to his customers, he always made sure that they felt welcomed and were treated well. Customers could always count on him to acquire the materials needed for the simplest of home and garden improvements, to the most complex of building for any contractors.
It was vital to him to grow in order to keep his customer base, because without customers there would be no business. Part of his success was establishing the many events for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and showing appreciation to the local Law Enforcement and EMS members, hosting a ladies night and men’s night where everything in the store was offered at a discounted price.
When he moved to Price it opened up the chance to pay it forward – whether it was helping the local schools, various fundraisers, several charities, along with volunteering himself as a member of many local organizations. He was a member of the Carbon County Chamber, served as chamber president in 2010, was the United Way of Eastern Utah President. “My biggest moment was winning the Big Business of the Year award from the Chamber in 2008,” said Clausing. This year would have marked his sixth year as a city council member.
When he started with Sutherlands back in 1986 it was as a Stock Boy stocking shelves in the lawn and garden department. Through all the years he has seen a lot of things change within the small neighborhood hardware lumber yard, especially, when computer programs came out. In March of 2005, Clausing was offered his own store in Price which was brand new to the area. “I was very honored because now I was the man, but was also scared I didn’t want to fail and disappoint the family I work for. The Sutherland family is one of the most amazing families that I have ever known,” said Clausing. Since running the show for the last 13 years, he has successfully made the store a long standing, thriving, established business in the community.
Although, it’s difficult for Clausing and his wife, Monica to leave Price, they are both looking forward to their future in the city. Maybe when the time is right, as soon as the couple are ready to retire, they just might return to the quiet and picturesque Castle Country area.
A gathering in honor of the man who wore many hats will be held on Sunday, October 29 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Tuscan Event Center located at 23 East 100 North. Community members are invited to personally thank him for being a good member of the community and to say so long. Light refreshments will be served.
