The Carbon Lady Dinos suffered two losses at the 3A State Championship Tournament Wednesday in Orem at Utah Valley University, bringing an end to the 2017 season in the process.
Entering the tournament as the No. 5 seed from Region 14, the Lady Dinos were paired with the Morgan Trojans, the No. 1 seed from Region 13.
Pegged as one of the favorites to claim the 3A State Championship, the Trojans delivered a three game sweep of Carbon in dominant fashion. The first set ended in a 25-10 win for Morgan, which led to a 25-11 win. The match came to an end in the third set as the Trojans triumphed 25-8.
The loss to Morgan dipped the Lady Dinos to the consolation bracket for an elimination contest with the Grand Red Devils. While Carbon delivered a competitive effort, the team ultimately came up short in four sets.
Grand took control of the match with a 25-18 victory in the first set, followed by a slim 25-21 win in the second. Carbon avoided the sweep in the third set with a 25-20 win, but lost the fourth 25-15.
The 3A State Championship tournament will continue through Thursday as remaining teams will battle for first through seventh place.
