Back-to-back losses brought an end to the volleyball season for the Emery Lady Spartans Wednesday afternoon at Utah Valley University in Orem.
Entering the state tournament as the No. 4 seed from Region 15, the Lady Spartans were matched up with South Summit, the No. 2 seed from Region 13. Despite encountering early success Emery faltered in four sets.
A comfortable 25-19 win in the first set gave the Lady Spartans a 1-0 lead in the best of five set. South Summit controlled the next set with a 25-16 win, followed by a 25-18 performance. The momentum from the second and third sets carried over as South Summit won the fourth 25-12.
The first loss removed the Lady Spartans from championship contention and placed them in the consolation bracket against the South Sevier Rams, who lost to the Union Cougars earlier in the day.
Once again Emery used a quick start to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-21 win in the first set, only to drop the next three. South Sevier answered the call with a 25-19 win. The Rams finished the contest off with a 25-20 and 25-23 victories.
While the season is now over for Emery the 3A State Championship Tournament will continue through Thursday to name a state champion. Morgan, Richfield, Union and North Sanpete remain in contention for the title entering the final day.
