The Carbon School District weekly update brings attention to Mont Harmon Middle School. The school is made up of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, who recently just completed the first academic quarter, along with the end of their fall team sports activities.
“It’s been fun, it’s been busy, we’re going into quarter two and you know at Mont Harmon, we are in our third year in our turn around process, we’re getting our growth there,” said Principal Seth Allred. “Just some celebrations just to know where we started with turn around. First quarter there at Mont Harmon three years ago we had 1,200 F’s and this quarter when we went in and had our meetings, yesterday, we had 64.” It’s through the dedication of teachers and the hard work from students that have attributed to substantial changes in improving the school’s overall academic achievements.
Student athletics are preparing for winter sports at the school. “Wrestling and basketball are starting and its basketball tryouts, boys are going this week, girls had their cuts they’re going into games the first of November; first wrestling match Thursday, there at Mont Harmon. As far as athletics, it’s jumping right in, right into winter sports,” stated Allred. The tryouts for boys basketball will be held on Monday, November 13 inside the school’s gymnasium. The seventh and eighth grade will tryout first thing in the morning from 6:00 am to 7:30 am, sixth graders will tryout from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. After the first two days of tryouts, the group of boys will be combined in the morning on Wednesday, November 15.
The students are finishing up Red Ribbon week at the school which is a prevention campaign against alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and violence. Students participate in different activities and themes each day, such as Too Bright to do Drugs, where students will wear their brightest neon attire. Another fun theme is, My Future is too Important, students will use this day as a career dress day. It’s through the various daily themes that opens the lines of communication for students and teachers to bring attention to the dangers of alcohol and drugs.
