USU-Eastern SUN Center, has served oodles of soup over the years to members within the community, as well as, their student body.  The Bread n’ Soup Nights has been a long-standing tradition that connects the university with members of the community to benefit the Carbon County Food Bank.

“This has been something that has been going on since 1997, the community comes to the Student Center and has a great, warm meal, perfect for the fall season. But really what it’s about is raising money for the Carbon County Food Bank,” said Vice Chancellor, Greg Dart. “It’s been amazing because it’s been the community that has donated all of that money. When they come out to that event they know it’s going to a good cause and to give to an organization that really can use the funds.” Since the beginning of the annual event it is said to have approximately generated $50,000.00 in donations to help the local food bank.

The college dining services will prepare and serve three types of soups each night, chicken noodle, cream of potato and clam chowder. “We try to do a meal that is very affordable, $6.00 for adults, $5.00 for those 5 to 17 and free for those that are under 5. That gets you a couple bowls of soup and a great time,” said Dart. Each bowl will be accompanied by a delicious roll and a simple beverage. The event starts at 5:00 pm to 6:45 pm in the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center’s Multipurpose Room on the USU-Eastern Campus.

The university looks forward to hosting this event every year to assist the food bank which is a non-profit organization. Dart finished with, “I was blown away when I moved to this community and just saw the giving you see in this community. It’s not like anywhere I’ve ever lived. It’s pretty amazing how much people support their community and so as the institution of high education here at Utah State Eastern of course we’re going to be a big part of that.”

Last year, $4,000.00 was generated to assist the food bank during the holidays which is their busiest time of year. The university hopes that this year they will be able to beat that number to assist more individual and families that are in need.
