One month after the resignation of former coach Tom King, Carbon High School’s search for a new boys golf coach is underway.

According to athletic director Ted Bianco, a flexible timetable has been set for the early part of January to name King’s replacement. The topic was brought up during an interview last week on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports.

“It’ll probably be filled at some time at the beginning of the new year, that way that person can get what they need and get going,” said Bianco. “Golf is an interesting sport in itself because because it’s all about getting kids out and getting rounds in.”

After finishing third place in the 3A State Championship Meet in early October, King stepped down as head coach after seven successful seasons. During the last seven years under King, the Dinos became one of the most formidable teams in all of 3A. After two straight unbeaten region seasons, Carbon delivered their best state championship performance as a team in 2017.

“Our golf team over the last several years has been one of the premier teams in all of 3A,” said Bianco. “We had a really good group of kids with three young men on the Academic All-State team, and we were well represented on the All-State Team. Tom King has done an excellent job with the program, and it’s unfortunate he is stepping down.”

While the team will lose leaders Ryker Smith and Ryan Gagon to graduation, junior Carson Martines and sophomore Brady Gagon are expected to return. Both Martines and Brady Gagon were named to the All-State Second team last week after outstanding 2017 campaigns.

“Whoever gets to take over will have a great program coming back,” Bianco said. “We are looking for good things for our golf program and it has been fun to watch that program grow.”
