The Emery Lady Spartans delivered a defensive gem as they rolled past the Bryce Valley Mustangs 71-23 in the 2017 UHSAA Hall of Fame Game Tuesday evening at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
Holding the Mustangs to just one field goal in the first half, the Lady Spartans opened a hefty 38-8 lead going into the break. The lead grew to a 50-point advantage in the third quarter before Emery head coach Lynn Tuttle emptied the bench.
Emery junior Megan Jensen opened the game by scoring nine of the team’s first 11 points, including a three-point shot from the top of the key. Fellow junior Kacelynn Toomer posted a team best in points, and also scored the first seven of the second half.
Defensively Emery utilized a 2-2-1 full-court press to disrupt Bryce Valley early. The Mustangs were held to four points in the first two quarters, two points in the third and 13 in the fourth.
The Hall of Fame game has become a tradition in the past, pitting the previous season’s 1A champion against the runner up for the 2A state championship contest. Bryce Valley defeated Tabiona by one-point in the 1A State Championship back in February, while the Lady Spartans fell to North Sevier in the 2A title contest.
With Tuesday’s win now in the books the Lady Spartans will take the rest of the week off before returning to the court on Nov. 28 against North Summit.
