The Emery Spartans delivered a one-of-a-kind offensive performance in a 95-53 rout of the Carbon Dinos Wednesday night at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.

The lone meeting between the two teams on the basketball court this season quickly turned one-sided. After opening the game on an 11-0 run, the Spartans held a 32-7 lead at the end of the opening period. The Spartans relied heavily on the three-point shot, connecting on 18 of 38 attempts, falling just two shy of the state record of 20, held by Pleasant Grove and Woods Cross.

Emery senior Tyler Butler continued his early season success with a game 21 points, 18 of which came from deep. Fellow senior Easton Gordon contributed 19, while Kyson Stilson scored 16. Brax Jensen represented the fourth Spartan in double-figures with 15 points.

“Shooting as well as we did makes the game a lot easier,” said Gordon following the victory. “We definitely ran the court a lot quicker than they did and that helped out a lot. You combine that with our shooting and it was just a good night.”

For the game Emery finished a sizzling 53-percent from the field, while committing just two turnovers. The win moves Emery to 3-2 on the season, while snapping a two-game losing skid in the process.

Carbon struggled to stop the early momentum built by the Spartans. As a team the Dinos converted just four first half field goals and shot two of 18 from the three-point line. After a sluggish first half the Dinos responded by scoring 39 second half points.

Junior Derek Hillam led the way for the Dinos with 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds in a double-double effort. Ryan Gagon also provided some consistency for Carbon, finishing with nine points and six rebounds.

Wednesday’s loss is the fourth consecutive for Carbon, sending the team to 1-5 in the early non-region portion of the schedule. The Dinos will have an opportunity to bounce back as the team plays it’s third game in four days Friday on the road against Spanish Fork.

The Spartans will next play host to Maeser Prep on Friday at the Spartan Center. In three games Maeser is unbeaten, with two coming by double-figures. Live coverage of Friday’s contest will begin on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM at 6:30 p.m..
