Despite connecting on 16 three-point shots the Emery Spartans were unable to keep pace with the Union Cougars in a 92-75 loss Friday evening in Roosevelt.

Locked in a back-and-forth battle throughout the first half, Union managed to pullaway with a steady third and fourth and quarter. Trailing 40-39 at the end of the first half, Emery was outscored by seven in the third quarter, and nine in the fourth.

Senior Easton Gordon delivered a season best 27 point performance for Emery in Friday’s loss. Cade Brazier contributed 15, all of which came from deep, while Brax Jensen finished with 14. After a slow start Kyson Stilson scored nine in the second half to finish with 13.

Jon Parker recorded a double-double for the Cougars with a dominating 36 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Ty Gillman scored 21 points and grabbed eight boards, while Kaiden Owen ended with 11 points.

As a team Emery finished 16-36 from the three-point line, but shot only seven free throws. The Spartans also lost the turnover battle, committing 19 compared to Union’s 12.

Friday’s contest is the final of the non-region slate for Emery, placing their record at 6-3 entering Region 15 action.

Returning to the court on Wednesday, Emery will open league play with a home contest against Richfield. The week of action will end on Friday, with another division game against South Sevier.
