Offensive struggles in the second and third quarters proved to be the difference as the Carbon Dinos dropped a 56-43 decision to the Union Cougars in Region 14 play Tuesday evening in Roosevelt.
Needing a win to enter a three-way tie at the top of the division standings, the Dinos started the game fast, outscoring Union 14-12 in the first quarter. The tide turned in the second as Union turned the two-point deficit into a 26-18 lead at half time. The Cougar advantage grew to 11 entering the fourth quarter.
Derek Hillam led the way for Carbon in the setback with 19 points. Ryan Gagon helped push the offense with 18 points, while Colin Lewis finished with six. The three Dinos represented the only players to score in the region tilt.
Playing without leading scoring Jon Parker, the Cougars were led by forward Ty Gillman who scored 12 points. Both Nate Foote and Kaiden Owen scored 10 points, while Gage Roberts finished with eight.
Tuesday’s loss dips Carbon to 4-11 overall on the season, and 3-2 in Region 14 play. The win gives Union a 5-0 league record, and a commanding lead at the top of the standings.
Carbon will now have a full week off before returning to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 17 on the road against American Leadership Academy. The next home game will follow two days later against Delta.
