The Emery Spartans survived a late San Juan rally to pull out a 77-70 victory in Region 15 play Friday night at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
Holding a 60-37 lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Spartans were seemingly in control. San Juan quickly found rhythm offensively and managed to get back within three. With the game in doubt Cade Brazier converted from deep to give the Spartans breathing room, and the eventual win.
Easton Gordon led all scorers with 18 points as Emery improved to 3-3 in league action. Brazier poured in 16, and Kyson Stilson finished with 15. Sophomore Brax Jensen also helped push the offense with ten points, and Tyler Butler ended with nine.
San Juan mimicked Emery’s production as four starters recorded double-figures led by Jaxon Torgerson’s team best 16 points. Shaw Nielson added 15 points, while Dylan Ivins scored 13, and Jaden Torgerson scored 10.
Friday’s win for Emery creates a log-jam in the highly competitive Region 15 division. Now 3-3 the Spartans are tied with North Sanpete for fourth, but trail Manti, Grand and South Sevier by just one game for first.
The Spartans will begin the second and final section of round-robin region play Wednesday with a trip to Richfield to face the Wildcats. Emery won the first meeting between the two schools 47-33 back on Jan. 3.
Live coverage of Wednesday’s road tilt will begin on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM beginning at 6:30 with the Landon’s Diesel Service Pre Game Show. Tip-off will follow shortly after at 7:00.
