The Carbon Dinos created uncertainty at the top of the Region 14 standings with a 74-68 overtime win over the Union Cougars Wednesday evening in Price.
Locked in a tight battle throughout the contest, the Cougars outscored Carbon by seven in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The additional period played out in favor of the Dinos to give them an upset victory over the division’s top team.
Derek Hillam poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the Dinos to their fifth region win of the season. Ty Anderson delivered 18 points and Ryan Gagon finished with 14. Carbon’s balanced offense produced seven different players scoring at least three points.
Jon Parker led the way for Union with 17 points, while Ty Gillman contributed 15 points as the Cougars lost for just the third time in division play. Chase Birchell finished with 10, while Reid Price scored eight.
With the loss Union no longer controls their own destiny for the region’s top spot. Now one game behind Juab in the loss column, the Cougars would need Juab to defeat Delta in order to finish tied for the top spot.
The win for Carbon marks the second straight following a five game losing streak. Now sitting 5-6 in region play, the Dinos are tied with Juab for fourth entering the final game of the regular season on Friday.
