The City of Green River, along with John Wesley Powell River History Museum are thrilled for the upcoming Rock and Mineral Festival set to take place on March 23 through March 25 at the museum. The free festival will feature vendor booths, talks from local experts, field trips to geological and paleontological sites in the area.

On the evening of Friday, March 23, opening speaker will be Greg McDonald, BLM Regional Paleontologist. His presentation is entitled “Sloth on the beach: Aquatic adaptations in a lineage of extinct sloths,” which is about his research on the extinct giant ground sloths and their relatives and Plio-Pleistocene mammals of North and South American.

Saturday activities will start bright and early with vendors and workshops opening at 9:00 am till 4:00 pm. There are various field trips schedule throughout the day with a visit to the Crystal Geyser near town leaving at 9:30 am; Pigeon Blood Agate Rockhouding will depart at 11:30 am and be led by Rockhound, Alison Jean Cole. At 1:30 pm, BLM Regional Paleontologist, ReBecca Hunt-Foster will lead a trip to Copper Ridge and Mill Canyon to see eight different species dinosaur tracks. The evening will consist of enjoying the sunset and Geode hunting at FM Hill from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Guests will be able to unwind for an evening of Karaoke at West Winds.

The final day of the festival will be a road trip that leaves at 9:00 am for the Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry which will loop around the eastern basin of San Rafael Swell to explore the many petroglyphs. BLM Regional Paleontologist, Greg McDonald will lead a trip at 10:00 am to Fossil Point which is a site of many dinosaur bones.

Guests can enjoy a few self-guided tours to Lower Gray Canyon, Black Dragon and Sego Canyon. Information on how to get to these areas will be available at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum.
