The USU Eastern Theatre Department is excited to present their final production inside the Peterson Theatre beginning on February 22. They would like the community to attend Steel Magnolias, which is the first show of the spring semester. The play will start at 7:30 pm on February 22 through February 24, then pick up again on March 1 through March 3.
The all-female cast for this production is quite small with only six students. “It’s a very intimate set and a very intimate show, everybody is going to be very close to everything that goes on,” said Stage Manager, Josh Demie. “It takes place in a salon, Truvy Jones owns a salon and she runs it and you meet these characters as they are coming in on the day of Shelby Eatenton’s wedding.” Shelby is considered the lead character and is the influencer of everything that happens throughout the story.
“The story is based off of the man who wrote it, Robert Harling, it’s based off of his life, Shelby was his sister. So, the movie and the play are very close to what he actually witnessed his family go through,” stated Demie. In 1985, Harling’s sister died due to complications from Type 1 diabetes. Although, the show may seem like it has a sad storyline, the actresses in the play present it to the audience in a very lighthearted, life goes on sort of way by portraying a tight bond with one another.
The Peterson Black Box Theatre box office will open at 6:30 pm each night. The cost is $12.00 for adults, $9.00 for senior citizens, $7.00 for USU-Eastern faculty and staff, $5.00 for children and $3.00 for USU-Eastern students with their current student ID.
The last production of the year will be Guys and Dolls a musical that will be held in the newly renovated Geary Events Center beginning April 12. The department would like to invite any alumni of both CEU Theatre and Eastern Utah Theatre to attend the showing scheduled on April 21 so that they may be recognized.
