The Carbon Lady Dinos used a big third quarter run to pull away from the Summit Academy Bears for a 52-36 win in the opening round of the 3A State Championship Tournament Friday night at Wasatch High School in Heber.
Holding a 24-21 at the end of the first half, the Lady Dinos outscored their opponent 19-8 in the third quarter. Using aggressive and effective defense, Carbon held Summit Academy to just 15 points in the final two quarters.
Abbie Saccomanno scored a team-high 16 points, 12 of which came from the three-point line, to lead Carbon in the win. Kelsey Sorenson stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jordan Bianco scored nine points, and Jodi Noyes ended with six.
Friday’s win marks the eighth consecutive for Carbon, improving the team’s overall record to 17-5.
Summit Academy’s Micah Gustafson produced a stellar performance with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Sydney Drummond finished with nine points, and Brynlee Beck scored three.
Carbon will now move on to face the Emery Spartans in the quarterfinals of the 3A State Championship on Thursday at Dixie State University. The meeting between the two schools is the first since 2015.
