The Pinnacle Panthers will square off with the Panguitch Bobcats in the opening round of the 1A State Championship Tournament Wednesday evening at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
Ending with a 4-6 league record, the Panthers clinched the No. 3 seed from Region 19. Entering the final four days of the 2017-18 season, Pinnacle will join 15 other schools in the quest for a State Championship.
Led by senior Kaden Daughters, Pinnacle finished with a 10-11 record overall. Despite ending the season on a three game losing streak, the team logged division wins over Green River, Monument Valley and White Horse.
Daughters posted a team best 10.05 points per game during the regular season to lead the team in scoring. The Panthers delivered a balanced offensive attack with Logan Ellington scoring eight per tilt, and Isaiah Wilstead contributing seven.
Wednesday’s opening round tilt will place the Panthers against Panguitch, the No. 2 seed from Region 20. After rolling through the region slate unbeaten, the Bobcats suffered a loss to Bryce Valley in the division tournament championship game.
Panguitch logged several impressive victories during the regular season, including three wins in three days over Carbon, Cedar and Providence Hall. Averaging 66-points per contest, the Bobcats enter the State Tournament as the top scoring 1A team in the state.
Tip-off for Wednesday’s game is schedule for 5:30 p.m.. The winning team will advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday to meet either Tintic or Water Canyon at 2:30 p.m..
