For the second consecutive season the Emery Spartans have claimed the Cactus Classic Championship, finishing a perfect 4-0 in the pre-season tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Mesquite, Nev.

Opening the tournament with one game on Thursday, the Spartans earned a 12-8 win over Pahranagat Valley, the team’s first victory under manager Rob Smith.

The Spartans recorded seven team hits in the win, producing no fewer than two runs in each of the four innings played. The Spartans scored a game changing five runs in the second to pull away for good.

Senior Colton Willson continued to provide production at the plate, registering two RBI after a dynamic performance in Tuesday’s opener against Gunnison.

Riding the momentum from Thursday’s win, the Spartans returned to the field Friday morning, and defeated Virgin Valley 5-2.

Cade Brazier earned the win on the hill allowing just five hits and two earned runs in six innings of action.

Willson and Koda Alton led the way offensively with two RBI’s a piece. As a team the Spartans accumulated five hits and finished the contest scoring the game’s final five runs.

Returning to the field later in the day Emery defeated Valley 10-7, allowing the team to advance to the tournament’s championship game.

With the game tied 6-6 the Spartans scored four runs in the sixth frame to pull away for good. Stilson earned the win on the mound giving up four hits and two earned runs to go along with three strikeouts in three innings.

Willson, Stilson, Bron Gordon and Easton Gordon all recorded one RBI. Notching just six hits throughout the game, Emery’s patience at the plate played a major factor as the group ended with five walks.

Emery clinched the tournament championship with a win over a familiar opponent, defeating San Juan 6-2 Saturday afternoon.

Junior Logan Healey pitched 4.2 innings allowing just one earned run and four strikeouts. Jace Collard delivered two innings of relief work, giving up just one hit during his time on the mound.

Rance Jensen and Bron Gordon each finished with two RBI’s, while senior Jared Snow added another. As a team Emery finished with nine hits, compared to just two for San Juan.

The successful weekend trip moves Emery to 4-1 in non-region play, setting the stage for the Region 15 opener on Tuesday at home against the Grand Red Devils. The two teams will wrap up the season series with a venue change on Friday.
