The Carbon Dinos opened the track and field season with a second place performance from both the boys and girls at the Grand Invitational Tuesday in Moab.
Competing against seven other schools the Dinos wracked up 116 points on the boy’s side of the track, finishing well behind first place Grand’s 237 points. Emery finished in third with 108, followed by Montezuma with 50 points. Monticello and San Juan completed the field.
Grand also claimed first place on the girl’s side of the track, outscoring Carbon 152.5 to 131.5. Eagle Valley finished third with 84.5 points, followed by Emery and Montezuma. San Juan, Monticello and Green River completed the field of eight.
“I think it was a good opener for us with great weather, and the meet went really smooth,” said head coach Jim Jewkes. “We had a lot of kids that did well for us. It was the first meet in my coaching tenure where we had a boy and a girl finish in the top eight in every event.”
Shannon Baker delivered a dynamic performance for the Lady Dinos taking first in three individual events, and contributing to a team win in the 4×100. Baker’s individual first place honors came in the 100 meters, 400 meters, and long jump.
“You can’t perform any better than what she did. She just looked really, really good at the opener,” Jewkes said. “She is definitely a force to be reckoned with on the track. Her 100 time at the meet was one of the fastest early season times that we have ever had.”
Mikelle Monson, Megan Swasey and Madelyn Christensen helped Baker in the 4×100. The group finished the finals with a time of 53.93.
Another first place performance came from Jodi Noyes in the shot put, who topped teammate Harley Migliori with a final toss of 9.27 meters.
On the boy’s side of the track the Dinos received a big boost in the long jump. Carson Frame claimed first place by beating out second and third place finishers Derek Hillam and Carter Fausett. The one-two-three finish allowed the Dinos to climb past Emery for second place.
“You have to have athletes that can finish in the top six, seven or eight spots,” said Jewkes. “Every point counts in the end when the region is closely contested.”
The Dinos will return to the track with a dual meet against Emery at Carbon on Friday afternoon. The meet will work more as a training session for the two schools as it is not a state qualifier.
Carbon’s next qualifier will take place Tuesday, March 20 in Emery at the Darrel Gardner Invitational.
