Brett Johnson has officially been named head coach of the Carbon High School golf team, it was announced by school officials earlier this week.

Johnson, 29, is currently an assistant coach for the Carbon girl’s softball team. He will replace former coach Tom King, who held the position for seven successful seasons. King resigned following the end of the 2017 season in October.

“TK has brought up a great program and I’m really excited to take it over,” said Johnson. “The nice thing is I’ve been playing golf since I was eight years old. Taking that knowledge along with what TK taught me, I believe I’ll be able to help these kids grow as players.”

Johnson played four years of high school golf at Carbon High School under then head coach Tony Pinedo. For the last eight years he has worked at the golf course and has also assisted King with instruction of the golf team.

“Teaching the mental edge of golf is the biggest step for each kid,” Johnson said. “This year I want to implement a little more in the summer to prepare us for the season. It’ll be important to have the boys come out and hit balls and prepare before the start.”

Current junior Carson Martines and sophomore Brady Gagon are expected to return to lead what should be a highly competitive team under Johnson. Both Martines and Brady Gagon were named to the All-State Second team in October after an outstanding 2017 campaigns.
