The Emery Spartans wrapped up a busy baseball weekend with two straight non-region victories over the South Summit Wildcats in double-header action Saturday afternoon in Castle Dale.
After dropping a region tilt 15-5 to the South Sevier Rams on Friday, the Spartans welcomed South Summit to Castle Dale on Saturday. The results worked in Emery’s favor as the team improved to 8-4 overall on the season.
A two-run first inning was the necessary edge Emery needed to sneak out a 4-3 victory in the first game of the double header.
Cade Brazier delivered a complete game effort allowing just four hits and one earned run on the hill. Keeping South Summit off balance, Brazier struck out six batters and walked just two.
Jesse Barnett finished 1-3 at the plate and registered a team high two RBI’s to lead the Emery offense. Easton Gordon also ended 1-3, bringing in one run. As a team the Spartans registered just four hits.
The momentum built in the first game carried over to the second as the Spartans earned a comfortable 9-2 win to sweep the afternoon set.
Kyson Stilson recorded the win on the mound going the distance, while allowing eight hits and two earned runs.
Six different players logged at least one RBI for the Spartans as the team finished with nine total hits. Gordon again provided a consistent bat finishing a perfect 4-4 at the plate with two doubles, one triple and a RBI.
While the non-region wins continue to pile up, Emery will have an opportunity to improve their current 1-3 division mark on Tuesday against San Juan. The two teams will then wrap up the season set on Friday in Blanding.
